Park Poétik Kinshasa

Every year, Park Poétik sows its seed of poetry in Forest and Saint-Gilles (Brussels, Belgium), sprouting ideas, lighting up streets, brightening faces and making dreams come true. Its branches and leaves grow so much that they cross visible and invisible borders and land in the bustling streets of Matete (south-western Commune of Kinshasa, Congo).

This is the story of a talented young visual artist, Daniel Toya – Robotboy from Kinshasa, who wants to organise a street festival in Kinshasa in the municipality of Matete after his adventures during his residency at Park Poétik in Brussels in 2022. Upon his return, he immediately contacted the artists he was used to working with and started looking for new talent in his neighbourhood. Everyone was enthusiastic and the ambition for this project quickly took off.

Things did not always go as planned, with some communication problems here and there or absentees at collective meetings. Others were then working to survive and therefore did not always have time for their practice as artists. It became a long process of long-distance exchanges and consultations on the foundations of Park Poétik Kinshasa.

In the end, Super Daniel did not lose hope and continued his dream by donning his superhero costume to save art and push through the right to culture for the people of Kinshasa.
